I work in a very crowded and busy prison where you have to be on your game all the time or you could be injured or never go home to see your family again. There are many inmates who hate authority figures, and if given the chance, will lash out and cause serious bodily hard. These inmates have nothing but time to plan their moves and to look for opportunities to come after officers, so we can not relax or lose focus for even one second.
There have been numerous attacks on officers this year already, so we have been making an extra effort to combat the problem. To keep any types of weapons from getting into the hands of the inmates, we have been stepping up our efforts at the visitor center. This is where inmates and visitors interact, and all sorts of contraband can exchange hands. Despite us posting that visitors risk jail time if caught, things still get into the hands of our inmates.
When Securus Technologies placed a new call monitoring system for the inmates in the prison, we discovered we had a new resource in our efforts to make the prison safer. Securus Technologies CEO Rick Smith says his Dallas-based company has over 2,600 systems in jails around the country, and his team is committed to making our world that much safer. The new call system is going to do what we have not had the luxury of doing all these years. Instead of us working harder to get the results, now the software is going to do the work of several officers and allow us to put resources in other areas of the prison to tighten things up.
Once we learned how the LBS system worked, we got right to work and discovered a number of disturbing things. We found where inmates were hiding weapons in the yard right at the fence line. On another call we discovered inmates talking about how visitors can bring weapons in without being detected. There was one disturbing call where top-ranking gang members in jail were ordering crimes throughout the city to their gang soldiers. Now we have the ability to be able to get in position to intercept orders like that.
Each time we get a lead using the monitoring system, we dispatch a team to take care of it. Our jail is that much safer as a result. If we discover inmates talking about how they got or how they are getting drugs into the jail, now we act before they can even get the satisfaction of having pulled one over on us. The result we are hoping here is to completely eliminate contraband from getting to those inmates.
